WTA and WTA Benefits Trust:
Williamsville Teachers’ Association (WTA)—Our Local Union
The WTA represents over 900 active members. The WTA includes all certified personnel working in the district who are not administrators or curriculum specialists—this means teachers, social workers, psychologists, counselors, librarians, nurses, nurse practitioners, reading specialists, math specialists, administrative assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and certified occupational therapist assistants. The WTA includes professional staff who are working as regular substitutes, but does not include day-to-day or long-term substitutes.
New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) - Our State Affiliate
NYSUT represents more than 605,000 members in over 1,200 local unions. NYSUT includes teachers, school-related professionals, academic and professional faculty in higher education, professionals in education and health care, and retirees. Since the merger with NEA-NY in 2006, NYSUT represents almost every public school local in New YorkState.
NYSUT locals range in size from tiny locals of fewer than 10 members to the United Federation of Teachers, which represents more than 140,000 teachers and other school employees in New York City.
American Federation of Teachers (AFT)—One of Our National Affiliates
AFT represents more than 1.4 million members. It has more than 3,000 local affiliates and 43 state affiliates. AFT has five divisions within the organization that represent teachers; paraprofessionals and school-related personnel; local, state and federal employees; higher education faculty and staff; and nurses and other healthcare professionals. In addition, the union includes more than 170,000 retiree members.
National Education Association (NEA)—One of Our National Affiliates
NEA represents more than 3.2 million members. NEA represents people who work at every level of education—from pre-school to university graduate programs. NEA has affiliate organizations in every state and in more than 14,000 communities across the United States.
NEA is considered a professional organization, not a union. NYSUT became affiliated with NEA when NYSUT and NEA-NY merged in 2006.
American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO)—An International Federation of Labor Unions
AFL-CIO is a federation of 55 national and international labor unions and includes more than 10 million workers. Because of our membership in AFL-CIO, we are also members of the New York State AFL-CIO and the Buffalo Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO.
